What this comparison covers — and what it doesn't

This is a like-for-like comparison of seven electric fence energizer brands sold in North America: Gallagher, Parmak, Patriot, Speedrite, VetraPulse and Zareba. Brands are presented in alphabetical order and not ranked, because a 0.2-joule portable unit and a 12-joule mains unit are not competing for the same customer.

The four specs that decide everything

Every brand publishes different marketing numbers, so the only fair way to compare them is to convert each product back to the same four measurements.

1. Output joules (the real power number)

A joule is a unit of energy released down the fence line with each pulse. Quality manufacturers publish two figures: stored joules (what the capacitor holds) and output joules (what actually reaches the wire). Output is the number that matters, and it is the only number that compares cleanly across brands. As a starting point, fencing specialists commonly plan around roughly one output joule per mile of energized wire under light load, then add capacity for vegetation, poly conductors and future expansion.

2. Voltage on the line

Joules move the energy; voltage is the pressure that pushes it through hair, wool and wet weeds. Most livestock fences target a working voltage of several thousand volts at the far end of the run. Fixed-voltage energizers hold one setting; adjustable units — such as the VetraPulse Multi-Powered charger with 8 kV, 10 kV and 12 kV settings — let you dial output up for cattle or wildlife and back down for poultry.

3. Power source

Mains (AC) gives the most joules per dollar wherever a socket exists. 12 V DC battery units suit remote paddocks. Solar units run themselves off-grid but are limited by panel and battery size. Multi-power or "dual-powered" chassis accept more than one input, which matters if your paddock layout will change.

4. Enclosure and protection rating

Energizers live outdoors year-round. An IP-rated housing (for example IP65, which is dust-tight and protected against water jets) tells you more than the phrase "weather resistant". Lightning is the leading cause of energizer death in most regions, so check whether the brand's warranty covers lightning damage — Parmak and Zareba both explicitly do, on defined terms.

Rule of thumb

Buy roughly double the joules you calculate. Fences grow, weeds arrive, and an energizer running at half capacity lasts longer than one running flat out.

Where it stops

Feature sets are deliberately traditional — you will not find app connectivity or selectable multi-level output. Solar models are sized for small and medium fences rather than large commercial perimeters.

Where it stops

Output ceilings are low, so a Patriot portable will not carry a long multi-strand perimeter or heavy weed load. There is no adjustable voltage, and no monitoring.

Specifications are presented in miles first, which makes cross-brand comparison harder, and warranty length is tiered by mile rating rather than uniform across the range. The line is built around homestead and hobby use rather than intensive commercial grazing.

Why "miles of fence" claims mislead — and what weeds really cost you

Almost every brand advertises a mile figure. Those numbers assume a single clean wire in perfect conditions. Zareba is unusually transparent about the drop-off: it states its 25-mile AC charger energizes up to 25 miles in ideal, weed-free conditions, up to 12 miles in light weeds, and up to 6 miles in heavy weeds.

The practical lesson applies to every brand on this page: a fence that meets spec in March may be at a quarter of its rated capacity by July. That is the case for buying headroom, and it is the reason adjustable-output units are useful — you can raise output as the season loads the line, rather than replacing the energizer.

AC, DC or solar: which power source suits your site

Power source is usually the first fork in the decision, and it narrows the brand shortlist immediately.

Pre-purchase checklist

Measure the wire, not the acres

Total the energized wire including every strand and cross-fence, then apply roughly one output joule per mile as a floor.

Double it

Add headroom for weed growth, poly conductors and the paddock you will add next spring.

Plan the grounding first

Under-grounded fences under-perform regardless of brand. Ground rods are cheaper than a bigger energizer.

Check the enclosure rating

Look for a stated IP figure rather than the words "weather resistant".

Read the warranty for lightning

Cover varies enormously between brands, and lightning is the most common failure cause.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we are asked that the comparison above does not already answer.

Do all brands measure joules the same way?

Not quite. Manufacturers may quote stored joules, output joules, or both, and stored is always the larger figure. When you compare two brands, make sure you are comparing output to output. If a listing quotes only miles or acres, treat it as a marketing figure and look for the joule rating in the manual or spec table. Units tested to IEC 60335-2-76 will state which measurement they are reporting.

Can I use one brand's energizer with another brand's netting or polywire?

Yes. Energizers, conductors and netting are electrically compatible across brands — there is no proprietary connection. What matters is matching output to the conductor: netting and polywire have higher resistance than steel high-tensile wire, so they need more joules for the same length. Mixing brands is normal practice on working farms.

How many ground rods do I need?

Grounding scales with energizer size, not brand. Small portable units often work with the single rod supplied; larger mains energizers typically need multiple rods spaced several metres apart and linked with insulated cable. Dry, sandy or frozen soil needs more grounding than damp loam. If your fence tests low and the energizer tests fine, grounding is the usual culprit.

Is a higher joule rating always better?

Higher output gives you headroom, which is genuinely useful. But an oversized unit costs more, draws more from a battery or panel, and needs more grounding to deliver its rating. The practical answer is to size for your fence plus a margin, and prefer adjustable output if your requirements will change through the season.

Will an energizer sized for cattle hurt poultry?

Fence energizers deliver short, pulsed, low-current shocks designed to deter rather than injure, and units built to recognised safety standards are used across species. That said, matching output to the animal is better practice: lower settings are appropriate for poultry and young stock, higher settings for thick-coated livestock and wildlife. Adjustable units let you do that without swapping hardware. Always keep children away from electrified fencing.

How do I test whether my energizer is performing to spec?

Use a fence tester or digital voltmeter at three points: at the energizer terminals, at the midpoint of the run, and at the far end. A healthy fence shows a modest drop along its length. A large drop points to a short, poor joins, or a conductor with too much resistance. Test the ground system too — voltage on the earth stake means your grounding is inadequate.

Do solar energizers keep working through winter?

They can, but reserve capacity decides it. Solar units store surplus energy in an internal battery to carry them through low-light days; the more reserve days a unit is rated for, the better it copes. In the northern US, clear the panel of snow and leaves, angle it toward the winter sun, and consider a model specified for cold-weather use. Some brands publish a separate cold-climate variant for exactly this reason.

Can I run two energizers on the same fence?

Not on the same wire. Two units pulsing independently interfere with each other and can damage the hardware. If one energizer cannot cover the whole system, split the fence into electrically separate sections with a cut-out switch between them, and give each section its own energizer and grounding. One larger unit is usually simpler than two smaller ones.

What actually kills fence energizers?

Lightning surge is the most common cause across every brand, followed by water ingress in units without a sealed enclosure, and battery failure in solar and DC models. Fitting a lightning diverter, choosing an IP-rated housing and keeping the fence line clear all extend service life more than brand choice does.

How long should an energizer last?

A well-grounded, surge-protected unit commonly runs for many years — owners routinely report a decade or more from quality energizers, and several manufacturers back this with multi-year warranties. Consumable parts are the limiting factor: solar batteries typically need replacing well before the electronics fail, which is why replaceable battery packs and available spare parts are worth checking at purchase.

Does a listed safety standard matter when comparing brands?

It is a useful filter. IEC 60335-2-76 is the international safety standard for electric fence energizers, and UL listing is the common US mark. A unit that names its standard is telling you its output has been measured against a defined method, which makes its published joule figure more comparable. Unbranded units that publish no standard are the hardest to evaluate.

Is it worth paying for an energizer with a display or alarm?

It depends on how far your fence is from your door. If you walk past the energizer daily, a simple indicator light is enough. If the fence protects poultry overnight or sits across a paddock you visit twice a week, a live voltage read-out and a fault alarm turn a silent failure into an immediate one — which is the difference between a fixed short and a lost bird.
